Argumentation is stating a clear claim and backing it with evidence and reasoning; analysis is examining that evidence closely to show what it means. Together they lift writing from merely describing things to actually arguing something — which is the whole point of academic work.

Here’s the leap that separates strong academic writing from weak: weak writing summarises (“here is what happened, here is what others said”); strong writing argues (“here is what I claim, here is my evidence, here is why it holds”). Markers reward the second every time — it shows thinking, not just reading.

The anatomy of an argument

  • A claim — a clear, debatable position (if no one could disagree, it’s not an argument).
  • Evidence — data, examples, or sources that support it.
  • Reasoning — the link that shows why the evidence supports the claim (the step writers most often skip).
  • Counter-arguments — honestly addressing the other side, which makes your case stronger, not weaker.
Describe vs argue
Describing: “The library’s opening hours are 9 to 5.” Arguing: “The library’s 9-to-5 hours fail its main users — survey data show 60% of students study after 6pm (evidence), so the hours miss exactly when demand peaks (reasoning), which suggests extending them (claim).” Same fact; one thinks, one merely reports.

Don’t skip the reasoning

The commonest weakness is a claim and some evidence with no reasoning between them — leaving the reader to guess the connection. Spelling out why your evidence proves your point is what turns information into insight. Never make the reader do that work for you.

Try this
Make a claim about something you know, then add one piece of evidence — and crucially, one sentence explaining why that evidence supports the claim. That middle sentence is where real analysis lives.
